 Environmental Management : Current Projects

SMRU Ltd Environmental and Quality Management System

Project manager: Dr Sarah-Anne Munoz (EMS); Aileen Marshall (QMS)

Researchers: Lindsay Grant, Janey Tinsley

Implementation schedule: Project starting April 2009 for period of 18 months

Aims and Objectives:

SDRC will assist SMRU Ltd to implement an EMS and a quality management system using a phased approach with the intention of SMRU Ltd gaining ISO14001 and ISO9001 accreditation. SMRU Ltd is the commercial arm of St Andrews University’s Sea Mammal Research Unit. It offers products and services that allow industry, government and NGOs to observe what goes on in our seas and to make well-founded judgements about the exploitation and management of our marine environment. SDRC researchers will work closely with SMRU Ltd staff and senior management to develop an integrated environmental and quality management system that allows them to provide customers with goods and services of maximum quality whilst concurrently minimising environmental impacts.

Highlands & Island Enterprise – Corporate Environmental Management System

Project manager: Dr Sarah-Anne Munoz

Implementation schedule: Phase 1 – 100% complete; Phase 2 – 100% complete; Phase 3 – 70% complete; Phase 4 – 60% complete

Aims and Objectives:

To assist the Headquarters of the Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and its area teams around the region to reach an internationally recognised environmental standard.

The principal method is to follow the implementation scheme of BS8555, a new British Standard that breaks down the process of implementing a formal environmental management system into five steps. The sixth step is to seek formal accreditation to ISO14001 or the EU standard EMAS

The project involves SDRC assisting a dedicated environmental working group and advising on the best route to certification. It includes undertaking audits alongside HIE staff, assisting with the writing of manuals, preparing forms and operating and management procedures for adoption by HIE. SDRC facilitates the HIE environmental working group through the whole implementation process and will provide awareness and consultation events for area offices.

SDRC Environmental Management System – Talking Green Walking Green

Project manager: Aileen Marshall

EMS Team: Lindsay Grant and Janey Tinsley

Implementation schedule:

Phase 1 – 100% complete; Phase 2 – 100% complete; Phase 3 – 88% complete; Phase 4 – starting

Aims and Objectives:

The Sustainable Development Research Centre is committed, in partnership with others, to securing the protection and enhancement of the environment where consistent with its duties and within available resources. In order to continually improve its environmental performance, SDRC has established an Environment Team, which is responsible for advising on the implementation and review of the environmental policy.

The Principal Environmental Aims of SDRC are to:

  • Comply with or exceed all statutory obligations and seek to minimise the environmental effects of its operations.
  • Consider environmental issues when making major decisions and seek to achieve sustainable environmental results within available resources.
  • Work closely with external stakeholders to reduce the impact of its business activities.
  • To implement an environmental management system and commit to a programme of continuous improvement.
  • Set environmental objectives and review past performance.
  • Develop and promote environmental awareness at all levels within the SDRC.
  • Respond to all environmental concerns relating to its business activities.
  • Require its consultants, contractors and suppliers to comply with the provisions of this environmental policy statement.
  • Promote awareness among stakeholders, including the public, of the environmental role of SDRC.

The Directors of the Sustainable Development Research Centre fully support the implementation of these principles.

SDRC has completed phases one and two following the BS8555 phased approach. We have almost completed phase 3 and are planning to fully implement our EMS after Easter this year. The emphasis is on continual improvement so year-on-year incremental progress is being closely monitored. We have been collecting data over the last year for our waste, energy and travel activities. This data has been analysed and will be used when we review the objectives and targets we set ourselves last year and set new targets for the coming year.
